China's research on key technologies for visible light communication systems has recently achieved significant breakthroughs, with real-time communication speeds increasing to 50Gbps (bits per second), equivalent to downloading a high-definition movie in 0.2 seconds. Visible light communication is a new high-speed data transmission technology that uses the light from semiconductor lighting (LED lights) to achieve "internet access with illumination". Visible light communication technology is green, low-carbon, and can achieve near zero energy communication. It can also effectively avoid weak points such as electromagnetic signal leakage in wireless communication, and quickly build a secure information space that is resistant to interference and interception.

Wu Jiangxing, an expert in the field of information technology in China and an academician of the CAE Member, said that at present, the world has a lighting network composed of about 44 billion lamps, and the integration of tens of billions of LED lighting equipment with other equipment will build a huge visible light communication network.

It is conceivable that after the realization of large-scale visible light communication in the future, each light can be used as a high-speed network hotspot. When people wait for a car, they can download several movies under the street lights. On planes and high-speed railways, they can also use LED light sources to wirelessly access the Internet at a high speed to meet the wireless communication needs at the end of the network, such as the indoor network, the Internet of Things, the Internet of Vehicles, Industry 4.0, security payment, smart cities, national defense communications, weapons and equipment, electromagnetic sensitive areas, and provide a new low-cost access method for Internet Plus.

In the coming decades, the amount of information transmitted will exceed the carrying capacity of the existing radio spectrum. Visible light communication technology can effectively break through the severe shortage of radio spectrum resources and is one of the next-generation wireless communication technologies with broad application prospects, which can form a strategic emerging industry with an annual output value of trillions.

High speed transmission has always been one of the key research topics in the field of visible light communication. The research and development team led by Yu Hongyi from the People's Liberation Army Information Engineering University has adopted a collaborative processing method of optics and electronics, breaking through key technologies such as efficient suppression of visible light spatial channel interference, and entering the stage of integrated and miniaturized design and implementation.

This university is one of the earliest research institutions in China to engage in visible light communication technology research and development. In 2013, it took the lead in undertaking China's first visible light 863 program project and established the "China Visible Light Communication Industry Technology Alliance". After more than 3 years of technological research and development, we have successfully developed application demonstration systems such as "visible light on-demand TV service", "visible light new wireless broadcasting", and "visible light precise positioning".
